EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BEST LED FACE MASKS

Woman wearing a Deesee Pro LED face mask that is reflecting red light on the sofa while typing on her laptop in a living room setting.

Don’t worry about booking that next appointment, with at-home LED masks you can bring the salon straight to your sofa, bed… or wherever you choose.

Still relatively new, LED light therapy was accidently discovered in the 90s. How? We’re glad you asked… After researching LED light on space’s plant growth, NASA quickly uncovered that it also worked to promote wound healing in astronauts – and the rest is as they say history!

Today LED skin care devices are recommended by renowned dermatologists all over the world as their light labour helps to treat a range of common complexion concerns – we’re talking redness, blemishes, pigmentation and everything in between.

Become an expert in the field yourself and join us as we speak to Lotti Tyson, Déesse PRO’s Global Head of Brand on everything LED…

WHAT IS LED LIGHT THERAPY & HOW DOES IT WORK

Otherwise known as light-emitting diode, “LED light therapy utilises a natural biological process known as ‘photobiomodulation’. It harnesses the power of different wavelengths of light, with each wavelength penetrating the skin at different depths. Prompting various cellular reactions within different types of cells, they evoke a different response within the skin.” explainsLotti. When it comes to your beauty regime, most LED face masks employ different wavelengths from red to blue light to target specific skin concerns. Read on to see how they differ…

RED LIGHT

Stimulates collagen and elastin productionBoosts circulation and lymphatic drainage Visibly improves signs of premature ageing and hydration

BLUE LIGHT

Clinically proven to kill acne causing bacteriaReduces the appearance of redness and inflammationRegulates oil production

GREEN LIGHT

Helps to reduce the appearance pigmentation Lessens the look of redness and evens out skin tone Improves over all brightens of the skin

NEAR INFRARED

Stimulates the wound healing responseAids in the enhancement of skin’s strength and thicknessCan be combined with any of wavelengths simultaneously

WHAT ARE THE LED FACE MASK BENEFITS

Aside from tackling the wide range of skin care concerns mentioned above, LED masks are also non-invasive. By this we mean they’re totally topical. Designed to hover directly over your skin, “they’re extremely versatile, especially when using devices that combine multiple wavelengths to create a bespoke treatment from home” adds Lotti. Not only do LED masks have these amazing skin care benefits, but they also can help to boost your happy hormone, serotonin, to promote overall wellbeing. I see it as a multi-tasking, holistic approach to skin care and wellness that will be with you for a lifetime of needs.”

WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF LED FACE MASKS

While LED light therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that has no downtime, some symptoms may need to get worse before they get better. “Some people do find that when treating pigmentation, these areas may darken before they start to fade, this is due to drawing out the dark spot-causing melanocyte cell… But the good thing is that this is only temporary! They key is to stay consistent and while you will see immediate results within the skin, regular sessions are required for optimal results.” says Lotti. “Another important thing to take into consideration when looking for an LED mask, is that not all colours will be the same wavelength. In order to get maximum results, you want to make sure, you’re purchasing a light therapy device that uses specific wavelengths that have been clinically proven to be effective.”

HOW TO USE A LED FACE MASK AT HOME

While instructions will vary depending on the treatment tool you choose, one thing that should always stay the same is the prep work. Lotti recommends to “cleanse thoroughly and apply your LED mask straight onto clean, dry skin. Save your serums and moisturisers for after.” And to really make the most of your mask why not mix and match wavelength settings? “Become your own facialist and design your bespoke treatment at home by combining two or more wavelengths in one treatment. A favourite of mine is 15 minutes of red light followed by 15 minutes of green light. This treatment combination gives an incredible, instant glow and hydrated appearance to skin. Perfect for perking up a dull, winter complexion.”Lotti adds.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU USE A LED FACE MASK

“The great thing is you cannot ‘overuse’ LED light therapy, so it can fit into your routine whatever your lifestyle.” Lotti explains. But, when it comes indulging in some light therapy “you should start by using the mask two to three times a week for the first four weeks, then once a week for maintenance.”
