MEET THE NEWEST NAMES IN NICHE FRAGRANCE

Niche perfumery is where fragrance gets to be more experimental, more personal and a little less predictable. Independent houses are pushing beyond familiar scent profiles and traditional rules, putting craftsmanship, originality and storytelling back at the centre of the conversation. And with five new names joining Cult, there’s plenty to discover.

“Niche fragrance embodies everything that is important to our Cult Beauty community: high-quality ingredients, artistry, originality and made in smaller, more limited batches,” says Abigail Routley, our Fragrance Buyer. “Our indie niche fragrance brands are a great choice if you want scents that are more unique, and they tend to be excellent choices for layering.”

Consider this your introduction to the five names to know now. We went straight to the makers behind our latest brands to uncover the ideas, influences and philosophies shaping their scents.

TSU LANGE YOR: A SENSE OF HOME

On the art of making a place feel like home... “For Tsu Lange Yor, fragrance is the quickest route to a feeling of home. After a decade spent touring through hotel rooms, trailers and tour buses, founder Troye discovered that scent could transform an unfamiliar space into somewhere warm and personal. Unlike anything visual, fragrance works directly on memory and emotion — making it the perfect medium for creating a sense of belonging.”

On heritage that lasts... “The name Tsu Lange Yor comes from a Yiddish toast meaning ‘to long years’, and is dedicated to Troye’s great-grandmother, who spoke Yiddish. That sense of heritage informs the brand’s approach: creating things to be lived with, rather than consumed and replaced. It’s a philosophy that extends beyond fragrance into a celebration of time, connection and the people we care about.”

On scent as a story you finish... “Every Tsu Lange Yor fragrance begins with a specific moment or feeling rather than a list of notes. The story comes first; the fragrance follows. And once it reaches skin, the wearer becomes part of the creative process. Skin, mood and place all change the way a scent unfolds — with The Garden collection designed specifically for layering and building a personal scent wardrobe.”

On an Australian point of view... “Everything is conceived and made in Australia, with the country’s sunlight, salt, gardens and outdoors woven into the mood of the fragrances. There’s also a distinctly Australian take on indulgence at play: less about status, more about time well spent. The result is fragrance with a strong sense of place — but plenty of room for your own story.”

KISMET: MADE FOR THE MOMENT

On fate, and following it... “For Kismet founder, becoming a perfumer was never exactly part of the plan. The journey was shaped by a series of serendipitous moments, eventually leading to perfumery school and the creation of a house built around the idea of fate. That philosophy remains at the heart of Kismet: fragrances made with a genuine love for the craft, rather than a desire to follow the obvious path.”

On turning emotion into scent... “Fragrances from feelings” is Kismet’s guiding philosophy. Each composition begins with an emotion, memory or moment, with the formula built to recreate its mood and movement on skin. The result is closer to composing a piece of music than simply combining notes — with different ingredients creating their own rhythm, cadence and twists.”

On heritage, memory and identity... “The founder’s Iranian-American heritage is deeply woven into Kismet’s olfactory language. Memories of cardamom, bergamot, rosewater, saffron and hyacinth sit alongside childhood associations with perfume itself — something that represented femininity, warmth and confidence. It’s this intensely personal relationship with scent that Kismet hopes to spark in others.”

On going small and pushing further... “Kismet’s small-batch approach means greater freedom with ingredients, formulation and creativity. Without the same constraints of mass-market fragrance, the house can seek out specific raw materials and push them further — from a particular bergamot oil harvested in Sicily to an intentionally generous dose of vetiver. The philosophy? Depth and quality over reach and quantity.”

BDK PARFUMS: MODERN FRENCH PERFUMERY

On making French perfumery personal... “BDK Parfums takes the heritage and savoir-faire of French perfumery and gives it a distinctly contemporary, Parisian point of view. Founded in 2016, the house was created to build a new language within French fragrance — one rooted in tradition but shaped by a more modern, emotional and personal approach.”

On stories and silhouettes... “For BDK founder David Benedek, fragrance is inherently visual. A scent can conjure a colour, texture, silhouette, landscape or emotion, with inspiration coming from everything from fashion and photography to art, literature and the streets of Paris. Each fragrance becomes its own kind of invisible silhouette — a way to express an attitude before it’s fully understood.”

On reinventing the familiar... “Sometimes a BDK fragrance begins with an image or emotion; sometimes with a raw material. Either way, the aim is to take something familiar and reveal another side of it. Vanille Caviar, for example, was inspired by a trip to Madagascar and the dark, glossy scent of vanilla pods — transformed into a richer, more sensual interpretation of one of perfumery’s most familiar ingredients.”

On finding your signature... “BDK sees fragrance as an invisible signature: an intimate extension of personality that can become deeply personal over time. Rather than prescribing a particular scent, the house encourages discovery through the notes and accords you naturally gravitate towards. For a first introduction, Gris Charnel captures the house’s effortless Parisian DNA, balancing fig, sandalwood and iris with a distinctive yet incredibly wearable trail.”

ROOM 1015: THE ART OF REBELLION

On fragrance, music and rebellion... “For Room 1015, fragrance and music share the same power: both are invisible, immediate and capable of transporting you somewhere else entirely. Inspired by the spirit of rock ’n’ roll rather than its clichés, the house is less interested in nostalgia and more interested in what music represents — freedom, individuality and breaking the rules.”

On a room with no rules... “The name Room 1015 references the legendary Riot House in Los Angeles, a hotel room infamous for hosting some of the biggest names in 1970s rock. For the brand, it represents something bigger than rock history: an imaginary space where convention is left at the door and self-expression takes centre stage.”

On making rebellion wearable... “Room 1015 fragrances start with a story, image or feeling rather than a list of ingredients. Punk, the sexual revolution and counterculture might provide the inspiration, but the goal isn’t to literally make something “smell punk”. Instead, it’s about capturing the attitude — taking something familiar and twisting it into something provocative, unexpected and a little disruptive.”

On creativity without conformity... “For Room 1015, rebellion today isn’t about shock value. It’s about having the freedom to wear what you want, regardless of what you’re “supposed” to like. That same philosophy extends to layering: try Love-O-Matic with Wavechild for something playful and colourful, or Cherry Punk with Poppy Riot for a darker combination. There are no rules — which is rather the point.”

FASCENT: EMOTION, EXPERIMENTATION AND LAYERING

On making niche fragrance less serious... “FASCENT was created to challenge the solemnity that can surround fragrance: the precious bottles, intimidating vocabulary and sense that you need to know the rules before you can join in. For FASCENT, perfume is first and foremost a pleasure — beautiful, messy, unpredictable and entirely open to interpretation.”

On fragrance with personality... “The name FASCENT combines “facettes” and “scent”, celebrating the many sides of both people and perfume. Its eight fragrances are treated less like a collection and more like a cast of characters, each with its own personality. Some are serene, some provocative, some playful — and all are designed to evolve depending on who they meet.”

On the end of the signature scent... “FASCENT believes the idea of one signature scent has had its day. Why should one bottle have to capture every version of you? Fragrance can shift with your mood, your plans, the season or simply the day of the week. Having a collection isn’t indecision; it’s the whole point.”

On handing over the creative control... “Layering puts the wearer in charge. Rather than telling you what you should smell like, FASCENT encourages experimentation — combining fragrances to create something entirely personal. Its own pairings are merely suggestions, not rules. Because while the formula might be finished in the lab, the composition isn’t finished until it’s on you.”

On finding your olfactive vibe... “The advice is simple: stop trying to decide and start smelling. FASCENT’s discovery set lets you explore all eight scents, while its quiz focuses on how you want to feel rather than what you already know about perfume. Try one, try another, layer them together and see what happens. The aim isn’t necessarily to find the one — it’s to leave with a shortlist.”
