HOW TO FIND YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

HOW TO FIND YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Updated: 30/10/2026

Some people walk into a room and you know it's them before you see them. That's a signature scent: a fragrance so tied to who you are that it becomes part of how people remember you. The good news? You don't need a trained nose to find yours, just a little know-how and a willingness to experiment.

Our guide takes you from the scents you already love to a fragrance that feels like your own, step by step. Along the way, we'll look at how you want your fragrance to make you feel, how to turn that into a shortlist and how to know when you've found the one. New to notes, families and concentrations? Our 101 fragrance guide covers the basics.

WHAT IS A SIGNATURE SCENT?

A signature scent is the fragrance you reach for again and again — the one that feels most like you. It doesn't have to be rare or expensive, and it doesn't have to be a single bottle. For some people it's one perfume worn every day for years. For others it's two fragrances layered together, or a small wardrobe of scents that share a common thread and shift with the seasons.

What matters is that it feels effortless to wear and instantly recognisable as yours. Think of it less as finding "the one" and more as getting to know your own taste.

HOW TO FIND YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT

STEP ONE: START WITH THE SCENTS YOU ALREADY LOVE

Your nose already knows more than you think. Before you browse a single bottle, make a list of the smells that stop you in your tracks: freshly cut grass, a cup of black tea, sun cream on warm skin, a bakery first thing in the morning, the woodsmoke of a bonfire. Scent and memory are closely linked, so the smells you're drawn to are a reliable starting point.

Next, look at the fragrances you've loved in the past, whether that's a perfume you've finished, a candle you always repurchase or a friend's scent you've complimented. Check their notes on the product page and look for patterns. If vanilla, tonka bean or sandalwood keep cropping up, that's your nose telling you something.

STEP TWO: DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL

Choosing a fragrance works a lot like getting dressed. Some days call for a crisp white shirt, others for your cosiest knit or the jacket that makes you stand a little taller. Fragrance does the same job: it's the finishing touch that sets your mood and tells people something about you before you say a word.

So before you think about notes, think about the feeling. Ask yourself how you want your scent to make you feel, where you'll wear it most and what impression you'd like to leave. Then use it as a shortcut to your shortlist:

  • Energised and fresh: look for citrus, green notes, herbs and sea salt.
  • Polished and put-together: try soft musks, iris and clean, skin-like woods.
  • Romantic: reach for rose, jasmine, peony and other florals.
  • Grounded and at ease: cedarwood, vetiver, sandalwood and tea notes feel steady and understated.
  • Cosy and comforted: vanilla, tonka bean, praline and cashmere woods wrap you up like a favourite blanket.
  • Confident and magnetic: amber, oud, leather, tobacco and spice make more of a statement.

Where you'll wear it matters too. Just as you might not wear sequins to the office, a skin-close, understated scent often suits a workday better than something that fills the room, while evenings and weekends are your chance to turn the volume up. If you want a scent that works everywhere, look for one that sits somewhere in the middle — your fragrance equivalent of a great pair of jeans.

STEP THREE: NARROW IT DOWN BY FRAGRANCE FAMILY

Now put your two lists side by side. The smells you love and the mood you're after will usually point towards the same fragrance family, and that's where to start your search. Our 101 fragrance guide explains each family in detail, so here we've matched them to the moods above with one scent to start your shortlist.

If you want to feel energised: fresh

Your list is full of citrus peel, cut grass and sea air, and you like a scent that lifts you rather than announces you. For more ideas, our edit of the best summer perfumes is full of fresh picks.

Try: Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne. Sea salt and ambrette seeds meet earthy sage for a breezy, mineral scent that feels like a clifftop walk.

If you want to feel romantic or polished: floral

You stop to smell the roses (literally), or you're drawn to soft, powdery iris that feels quietly elegant. If you've written off florals as old-fashioned, it's worth another sniff — modern florals range from sheer and airy to deep and dramatic. Explore our full line-up of floral fragrances.

Try: Frédéric Malle Portrait of a Lady Eau de Parfum. Created by Dominique Ropion, it frames a rich Turkish rose with amber, incense and woods. It's also the most complimented fragrance in our review analysis of the fragrances that get the most compliments.

If you want to feel grounded: woody

Pencil shavings, a forest walk and a crackling fire made your list, and you'd rather your scent felt like a second skin than a statement. Browse our woody and musky fragrances.

Try: Hermès Terre d'Hermès Eau de Toilette. Grapefruit, a mineral touch of flint and strong cedar make an earthy, woody scent you can wear every day.

If you want to feel confident or cosy: amber

Incense, spice, tobacco or anything from the bakery caught your attention, and you like a scent people notice when you walk in. Amber covers both the smoky, spicy side and the sweet, edible side known as gourmand. See our edits of amber and spicy fragrances.

Try: Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club Eau de Toilette. Pink pepper and neroli open onto rum absolute and clary sage, before tobacco leaf and vanilla bean settle into a smooth, warm finish.

Leaning more towards the cosy, sweet side? Our guide to the best gourmand fragrances has plenty more.

Try: KAYALI Vanilla | 28 Eau de Parfum. Rich vanilla blends with brown sugar, tonka bean and musk for a comforting scent that's easy to love.

Torn between two families? That's completely normal, and most fragrances blend more than one anyway. Pick a scent from each and let the next step decide.

STEP FOUR: LIVE WITH IT BEFORE YOU COMMIT

A first spritz tells you whether you like a fragrance. Whether it's your signature takes a little longer to find out. Think of it like breaking in a new pair of shoes: the real test is how it feels on an ordinary Tuesday, not just in the shop.

Pick up your shortlist in a small size first. Discovery sets, fragrance samples and travel sizes let you try scents from across brands before investing in a full bottle. Then give each one a proper trial run and ask yourself:

Does it still feel like me at the end of the day? The opening is a first impression, but the scent that's left by the evening is the one you'll live with. (Our 101 fragrance guide explains how notes change over time.)

Does it match the feeling I was after? Wear it to the places you pictured in Step Two — the office, a dinner out, a lazy weekend — and see whether it fits.

Do I reach for it without thinking? If you find yourself picking the same sample morning after morning, that's a strong sign.

Do I miss it when I'm not wearing it? Take a day off from your favourite. If something feels missing, you may have found your signature.

What do other people say? Compliments aren't everything, but if friends start to associate a scent with you, it's well on its way to becoming your signature.

CAN'T FIND THE ONE? TRY LAYERING

Sometimes the most personal signature scent isn't found in a single bottle. Fragrance layering means wearing two or more scents together to create a blend that's entirely your own. It's a brilliant option if you love parts of several fragrances but none feels quite right on its own, or if you want a much-loved perfume to feel like nobody else's.

New to the idea? Our guide to layering fragrances covers the techniques, from which scent goes on first to working with body products. When you're ready to experiment, our edit of the best fragrance layering combinations has tried-and-tested pairings to start from.

A SIGNATURE SCENT FOR EVERY SEASON

Who says you can only have one? Just as your wardrobe changes through the year, so can your fragrance. Heat makes rich scents feel heavier, while cold air softens lighter ones, so many fragrance lovers keep a seasonal signature: a small collection of scents that share a thread, so they still feel like you.

The trick is to keep one element constant (a favourite note or family) and shift the rest:

Spring: lighten up with green notes, soft florals and citrus. Find inspiration in our best spring scents.

Summer: go fresh and airy with citrus, salt, coconut and sheer musks. See our best summer perfumes.

Autumn: warm things up with woods, spice, tea and tobacco. Discover our best autumn fragrances.

Winter: reach for amber, oud, vanilla and rich gourmands. Explore our best winter fragrances.

SIGNATURE SCENT FAQS

How do I find my signature scent?

Start with the smells you already love and how you want your fragrance to make you feel, then use them to find your fragrance family: fresh, floral, woody or amber. Shortlist a few fragrances from that family in sample or travel sizes, wear each one in everyday life and choose the one you keep reaching for.

How do I choose a perfume that suits my personality?

Think about fragrance the way you think about your clothes. Consider how you want to feel and the impression you'd like to make — fresh and energised, polished, romantic, cosy or confident — then look for notes that match. Citrus and herbs feel bright and lively, florals feel romantic, woods feel grounded, and vanilla, amber and spice feel warm and enveloping.

What if I get bored of my signature scent?

Tastes change, and that's part of the fun. You might switch to a scent in the same family, add a second fragrance for a different season or occasion, or try layering something new over your favourite to give it a fresh twist.

Can you have more than one signature scent?

Absolutely. Many people have a fragrance wardrobe with one scent for each season, or one for daytime and another for evening. As long as they share a common thread, like a favourite note or family, they'll still feel like your signature.

Your signature scent is out there. All that's left is to start sampling and follow your nose.
