Ask Cult Concierge: The Best Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Oily skin is the result of heightened sebum production. Sebum is the oily substance that hydrates and protects skin, and while it’s vital for keeping skin healthy, too much of it can cause clogged pores and breakouts.

Signs of oily skin include that notorious shine, as well as enlarged and visible pores, and the emergence of {blackheads and whiteheads}. The last thing you want to do is to “get rid” of all that shine, as while a matte complexion might seem desirable, going too far the other way can cause your skin to dry out and lose its glow, not to mention its protective barrier. The aim is to find the right balance: a happy and healthy complexion that looks radiant and glowy, but not greasy.

In this guide, {Cult Concierge} skin care expert {Natalie} has outlined her recommended morning and evening {skin care} routines to help you strike this balance, including the best products for {oily skin} at every step. Most of the products are repeated morning and night, so you only need to invest in six products for a full day-and-night oily skin care repertoire.

MORNING SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR OILY SKIN

STEP ONE: CLEANSE

9

£43.00

Start by cleansing your skin with {Sarah Chapman’s} {Skinesis Rapid Radiance Cleanse}. Blended with fine rare clays to absorb excess oil and salicylic and lactic acids to decongest, clear pores and smooth the skin, this oily skin cleanser helps to rebalance the skin and refine texture without compromising your skin barrier.

Simply massage into dry skin, then add a little water and massage again before rinsing clean or removing with a clean cleansing cloth. Try using this as a mask once a week by leaving it on for two minutes for a little extra TLC.

STEP TWO: TONE

Shake well and mist {Herbivore’s} {Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner} over cleansed skin prior to your routine. This rebalancing and refreshing toner will help ease inflammation, boost clarity, battle bacteria and calm confused complexions. Jasmine water instantly soothes the skin while white willow bark balances and decongests pores. It’s the perfect addition to your combination or oily skin care routine.

STEP THREE: SERUM

You’ve no doubt heard of the many benefits that {niacinamide} has on the skin, so try introducing this powerhouse ingredient to your regime to help reduce excess oil production. {The INKEY List’s} {Niacinamide serum} is infused with 1% hyaluronic acid along with 10% niacinamide, which won’t just help with rebalancing the skin, but will also calm redness, reduce blemishes and add essential hydration back into your skin. Use morning and night, or just once a day if preferred, prior to your {moisturiser}.

STEP FOUR: MOISTURISE

Oily skins still need moisture, so look for a lightweight but effective hydrator to give your skin moisture without the weight. The {Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream} from {Youth to the People} uses hyaluronic acid to draw much-needed moisture into your skin, while vitamins C, E and K provide superior antioxidant protection in this lightweight and nourishing moisturiser. Apply this morning and evening, before your SPF in the day.

STEP FOUR: SPF

17

£32.00

As always, your {SPF} is one of the most important parts of any routine, so finish your AM routine with a generous application of {SUQQU’s} {Watery Protector SPF 30}. This water-based SPF is the ideal sunscreen for oily skin, giving your skin UV protection without leaving it feeling or looking greasy. The subtle coral-pink tone gives your skin an instant pick-me-up too!

EVENING SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR OILY SKIN

STEP ONE: FIRST CLEANSE

Instead of foaming formulas, try switching to a cleansing balm to help balance oily skin. The {Living Cleansing Balm} from {Then I Met You} is a Cult favourite and one of the best cleansers for oily skin. It works to balance, soothe, hydrate and deeply cleanse to remove all impurities without stripping your natural oils (which can lead to an excess of oil production).

Use it as your first cleanse at night to melt away all traces of makeup and impurities from the day. Take the time to really massage this onto dry skin before emulsifying with water and rinsing completely clean.

STEP TWO: SECOND CLEANSE

9

£43.00

Give your skin a second cleanse using the {Sarah Chapman’s} {Skinesis Rapid Radiance Cleanse} from your morning routine. This will help to absorb any extra excess oil and clear pores so that you go to bed with thoroughly cleansed skin.

STEP THREE: TONE

Mist your {Herbivore’s} {Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner} over your face again to get all that antioxidant goodness and to restore balance to your skin again after a long day.

STEP FOUR: SERUM

Use your {The INKEY List’s} {Niacinamide serum} once more to regulate overnight sebum production.

STEP FIVE: MOISTURISE

Finish your evening routine with your {Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream} from {Youth to the People}, treating your skin to a healthy dose of vitamins and leafy greens before you hit the hay.
