From destigmatising taboo topics to taking an unapologetic approach to body and intimate care, it’s safe to say personal care is finally gaining the attention it deserves.
As we enter this new and liberating era, here at Cult Beauty we’ve got up close and personal with all areas of body care and putting our wellbeing back into our own hands. Whether you’re wondering what personal care is exactly, or what products will see you through your self care journey – we’ve got you covered.
WHAT IS PERSONAL CARE
In short, personal care focuses on your overall wellness and hygiene as well as your physical appearance. Powered by practices and products that help you to maintain and promote good health, it’s all about nurturing oneself. Encompassing a plethora of actions, personal care can refer to everything from basic bathing to microbe maintenance (supplements we’re looking at you).
WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF PERSONAL CARE
INTIMATE CARE
It can’t be denied that intimate care has come a long way since it first entered the beauty scene. Don’t believe us? Just look at this historical timeline for proof. While the first advert for feminine hygiene products launched in the 1870s, it wasn’t until 1972 that period products were permitted to be advertised on television. Fast-forward to today and we’re proud to say that these wellness products are now championed as part our daily routines.
From oils and wipes to pads and tampons, each of these everyday essentials are packed with soothing ingredients that gently cleanse without disrupting your natural pH level. Plus, protecting your intimate areas from odour-causing bacteria, they work hard to keep inflammation, redness and irritation at bay.
HAIR REMOVAL
Like all areas of beauty, hair removal is a personal choice, so – if you do decide to do it – it’s key to find which way works best for you and your skin. Whether you opt for waxing, shaving, laser or epilating, the prep and post care are just as important as the main event. By this we mean taking a steamy shower to soften the hair before removal, exfoliating the body to avoid ingrown hairs and shielding your skin’s surface with a moisturiser once all is complete.
ORAL CARE
Achieving and (most importantly) maintaining pearly whites, is no easy task – it takes a lifetime of care and commitment. However, with the right daily routine and products, optimum oral care can be a breeze.
Brushing, flossing, teeth whitening and rinsing with a mouthwash are just some of the easiest and most effective ways to accomplish healthy teeth and gums from home. While upgrading your toothpaste to ensure it contains fluoride helps to banish germs that can lead to tooth decay, flossing instantly stimulates your gums to remove plaque and reduce inflammation.

INGROWN HAIRS TREATMENTS
Otherwise known as the scourge of shavers, ingrown hairs occur when hairs grow back and curl into the skin following hair removal. Not only can they make skin itchy and irritated, they often appear as bumps, spots or whiteheads. And while for many it’s tempting to squeeze or pick them out, opting for an exfoliating treatment is a much more preventative and (less painful) process.
From lotions and oils to serums and scrubs, ingrown hair treatments come in all shapes, sizes and formulations. But one thing they all have in common – their purpose. Buffing the body to diminish dead skin cells, they stop pores from clogging while keeping skin soft, smooth and soothed.

DEODORANTS & ANTIPERSPIRANTS
Never understood the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants? Don’t sweat it, before we dive into why using the above benefits your personal care, here’s the best way to differentiate between the two.
Deodorants: formulated to eliminate odour (but not perspiration), they work by increasing your skin’s acidity to make it less attractive to bacteria.
Antiperspirants: filled with active ingredients, they temporarily block sweat pores to reduce the levels of perspiration that reaches your skin.
With that in mind, deciding on which one you would rather use will depend on your personal needs. Our suggestion? If you’re looking to primarily mask odour, opt for a deodorant. If you’re looking to fight against sweat, antiperspirant is the way to go.
