Cult’s LGBTQIA+ Brands to Support This Pride Month (And Every Other Month)

About Face model wearing glitter eyeshadow

The time is upon us, the moment we’ve been waiting for all year: a celebration of love, acceptance born from a rich history of struggle and perseverance… It’s Pride Month!

Although, here at Cult Beauty we celebrate Pride 365 days a year, with a commitment to support every member of our team and community to love who they want (in whichever way they want), we thought it was high time we celebrated some of our exceptional LGBTQIA+ founded and owned brands. As we celebrate the achievements of these creative powerhouses, we also feel it’s important to acknowledge the difficulties and discrimination the LGBTQIA+ community have faced — and continue to face on a day-to-day basis — behind the glitz and glamour that Pride Month surrounds us with.

And while we can’t change the views of everyone, we will continue to empower our Cult Beauty community, create safe spaces for creativity and learn together. No one can put it better than the icon that is Dominique Jackson who once said: “Imagine a world without people in the LGBTQIA+ community. How boring.”

Allies of Skin

Like a personal laboratory for your skin, Allies is obsessed with formulating ground-breaking (and life-changing!) formulas for every skin type. Founder and skin mastermind Nicolas Travis dreams up new and innovative products in their lab year after year, starting with their first original formulation (we’re looking at you {Peptides & Antioxidants Firming Daily Treatment}). Allies continues to be a front runner in discovering and bottling active ingredients you wouldn’t want to be without.

a collection of byoma

Jumping into a league of their own from their inception, BYOMA is in essence the skin care soulmate you were always looking for. Just like the perfect partner, transparency is at the forefront of this brand’s ethos — that and diminishing the ever-unrealistic beauty standards we could all live without. Marc Elrick, the mogul mind behind this oh-so real skin care brand, birthed BYOMA during lockdown to put an end to all of us wannabe biologists experimenting with heavy concentrated formulas and ending up with… less than desirable results.

good light

Take a step into a world of beauty, beyond the binary. Developed by David Yi and inspired by the Very Good Light community, good light was created to move culture forward by not only creating world class formulas but also by promoting a more inclusive definition of beauty. This is a clear reflection of the future we all want to see, where gender diversity and fluidity is weaved into the very fabric of how the beauty sphere grows. Because after all, beauty is for everyone. Each product is made with sensitive skin in mind, designed to be layered together to create seamless, clean (and yes, we mean clean, banishing 1,300 potentially harmful ingredients from their formulas) skin care routines that bring your wellbeing to the forefront.

Isle of Paradise

Wave goodbye to the flaky fake tans and patchy products of yesteryear, Isle of Paradise is just over the horizon. At the helm of this mighty crusade is the king of faux glow — Jules Von Hep, who has created the very first customisable colour-correcting tan packed full of skin-loving ingredients (we’ll take a double serving of avocado oil, thank you!). Taking centre stage isn’t just the wonder-brand’s stellar line-up of tanning royalty (although we’d be mad not to mention the Self-Tanning Drops), but also the customers behind it. Back in 2019, Von Hep chose to take a stance with his ‘Get Body Posi’ campaign, committing to making body acceptance and positivity at the very top of this brand’s ethos, creating solutions and pushing self-love to the forefront of their much-loved message. Now, this is the type of paradise we can really get behind!

Jordan Samuel Skin

Donned by the ballet elite, Jordan Samuel Skin is quite literally stage ready. All that’s left for you to do is ‘enjoy the glow’! As any frequent stage performer knows (this writer happens to be well versed in said realm) heavy make up and scorching stage lights do a number on the skin, from causing irritation to bringing on straight up sores. Enter: Jordan Samuel Pacitti. The eleven-year ballet alum set out to find the most effective ways to deal with this burden, and thus his brand was born. From Jordan’s dressing room to your home, these are products as good for you on the outside as they are on the inside.

Maling & Goetz Rum hand and body wash

New Yorkers born and bred, Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz strived to create something many brands have tried and failed to achieve — uncomplicated-yet-luxurious skin care and fragrance. These are the products that have been transforming skin care routines from New York to LA, London to Hong Kong for nearly two decades. Why? They do exactly what they say on the bottle; there’s no cheap thrills here — just high-quality ingredients paired with design-conscious packaging to create seriously efficacious products. Their targeted treatments are ready to be incorporated into your existing skin care regimes to add a little more va-va-voom — no matter your complexion concern. With all of this on offer, its no wonder they are Haul of Fame winners and a total Cult-classic…

MARA Beauty

Skin care from under the sea? Deep dive into an ever-loved Cult-classic, MARA. Founded by Allison McNamara, an esteemed beauty editor and social media icon, your skin is in the safest of hands. Chock-full of plankton, algae and seaweed extracts from the nutrient-packed waters of Ireland and France, the team at MARA (that’s Gaelic for sea, FYI) spent two years creating standout formulas that harness all these skin-loving ingredients so you can sea the glow. Oh, and did we mention they are family owned and Leaping Bunny certified? The gold standard of skin care, if you ask us.

Peace Out

peace out products

Peace Out is an LGBTQIA+ founded and run brand that has truly brought the fun back to our skin care routines, in part thanks to the much-beloved {Acne Healing Dots}, which promise to banish blemishes and right redness wrongs. The brands founder, Enrico Frezza, wanted to build a skin positive brand that allowed people to feel empowered and included, with a mission to bring peace to skin qualms no matter how big or small the problem may seem. Going one step further, Peace Out has partnered with LGBTQIA+ charity {The Trevor Project}, supporting programs that offer assistance to diverse communities.

Selfless by Hyram

Hailed as one of the internet’s best-loved and most popular skin care guru’s, Hyram Yarbro is no stranger to creating skin-spiration. So, it came as no surprise when this international icon released a skin care line that gave the beauty greats a run for their money — quite literally. Affordable and with social change at its heart, Selfless by Hyram aims to grow with a continually evolving standard of sustainability and transparency when it comes to sourcing, packaging impact and giving back to charity — so customers can make a selfless choice easily.

Too Faced

As one Cyndi Lauper once said: “Girls just wanna have fun!” And this was oh-so clear to the creators of cute, kitschy and high-femme beauty brand Too Faced, Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson. The pair wanted to inject a bit more fun into the industry — and customers, editors and influencers alike lapped it up. A particular hero? The Better Than Sex Mascara, a game-changer in the beauty sphere and a solid favourite in make up bags across the globe.

“I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act. It is an act that can be met with hostility, exclusion, and violence. It can also lead to love, understanding, transcendence, and community. I hope that my being real with you will help empower you to step into who you are and encourage you to share yourself with those around you.” — Janet Mock, American writer and trans rights activist
