She's so Cult

She’s so Cult: Tiffany Masterson

One of the industry’s best ever ‘good eggs’ (she literally oozes warmth and loveliness), Tiffany Masterson’s brand was born out of her own beauty bugbears. A lot like Cult Beauty’s Co-founders – Alexia and Jessica – both of whom felt disillusioned by the beauty industry ‘baloney’, Tiffany started {Drunk Elephant} after becoming bewildered by products that promised the earth and then failed to deliver. “I had all sorts of skin issues” says Tiffany; “I was a frustrated, confused brand-hopper searching for a solution. Nothing ever really worked and if it did, it wasn’t for long.”

Sound familiar? Tiffany started to study ingredient lists to find out what was causing her skin to ‘rebel’. She’d scrutinise the packaging to spot the common threads and then (attempt to!) eliminate them from her beauty regimen. She coined the phrase ‘suspicious 6’ – a list of no-nos which includes essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrancedyes and SLS – and, having struggled to find the right products she took matters into her own (highly capable!) hands…

Neither entirely ‘natural’ nor solely synthetic, {Drunk Elephant} straddles the two. Described as ‘biocompatible’, this range of beauty powerhouses brings together all the very best of both worlds – uniting lab-derived actives with natural oils to respect your complexion and stimulate cells without causing disruption and leaving skin overexposed. “I formulate with high percentages of actives at the ideal pH levels, and I make sure all of the ingredients are easily ‘absorbable’ and recognised by the skin” says Tiffany, who seems to be speaking the beauty world’s language…

It’s safe to say {Drunk Elephant} has fast become the skin care range to see (and be seen) with. Taking Instagram by storm – in no small part due to its super-cute colour-pop packaging – its rocketed straight to the top of America’s skin care ‘it’ list and shows no signs of slowing its rise towards world domination.

Boasting pure marula oil – the reason for the quirky name (search “Elephant Marula Party” on YouTube for copious LOLs) – this precious African elixir is jam-packed with antioxidants to ward against the damaging effect of our environment (take that pollution). It’s also brimming with essential fatty acids (great for elasticity) and naturally antimicrobial – brilliant for battling your breakouts.

Found throughout the range, marula sits alongside all the major skin care ‘food groups’ – vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides… all the nourishment your skin cells need to thrive (in digestible, bio-available ‘bites’). Beneficial for all skin (Tiffany does not believe in ‘types’), the entire range is made to mix and match to suit your needs. “Skin is skin” says Tiffany, who’s firm in her belief that there is one ‘ideal’ for everyone and issues such as ‘oiliness’ and ‘dryness’ can be rectified with proper care (and steering clear of common irritants).

If you’re having a ‘dull’ spell, try {T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum} to gently refine and restore misplaced radiance, while a shot of the {B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum} will flood your cells with moisture to help counter dehydration and diminish depth of fine lines. {Drunk Elephant} encourage you to ‘smoothie’ to create the blend that works for you – there aren’t any rules when it comes to combining the supercharged serums, creams, cleansers and oils – they’re mean to complement each other perfectly.

“A routine is only as good as its worst product, a product is only as good as its worst ingredient. it takes just one bad guy to ruin the party. Using {Drunk Elephant} exclusively is the best way to get maximum results” advises Tiffany. We don’t need much convincing…
