Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defence SPF 30 Reviews

For the price, you'd expect a better experience matching the description
As other reviewers said, it doesn't go on smoothly. The experience is pretty far from the product promise. Especially considering the price. It says it doesn't leave a residue? It does. Also "zero white cast"? Yes, it has a white cast, and it's sold as "sheer." Would not recommend for darker skin, though I'm pretty pale myself, and I wouldn't recommend it for pale people either. Not sure who it would suit. This product makes me wonder if this actually does what it says, or if there's a mistake in how I'm using it. If we're all putting it on wrong, they need to improve the instructions. I found Paula's Choice lightweight mineral sunscreen to be truly sheer and easy to use.
    Don’t get it
First of all, I am a huge fan of Drunk Elephant, so when I saw that they came out with sunscreen I was super happy, because I hoped their sunscreen must be so nice and won’t break me out. But I was wrong. It was really bad for my skin. Consistency is disgusting - oily, grainy, leaves skin white and the smell is strong. Also after a month of use, the consistency of it became even worse. So I decided product went bad, which is crazy, I only had it for one month.
    Protects but won't be repurchasing
This product does its primary job - it protects the skin and I have never been sunburned while having it on. You don't have to put a lot to cover the whole face so it is not that expensive when you see how long it has lasted you. Having said that, the formula consistency is just bad. It seemed to be runny from the first time I opened the bottle, leaves you with a white color and what bugs me the most it peels. When this happened the first couple of times, I thought that it just doesn't go well with makeup as I used it under my foundation, but the same thing happened when I was on a vacation and makeup-free. Won't be repurchasing.
    Bad consistency
It has a very gritty, liquidy, grainy consistency so the packaging is really not suitable for the product. The smell is strong and quite bad, leaves a white film on the skin and takes quite some time to absorb, but at least it protects your skin. I wouldn't recommend or repurchase it.
Protects well but has a few problems
The consistency of the product is very odd and very gritty/runny - doesn’t work so well in that tube with a screw on lid. The smell is for me quite off-putting and stays all day. However; the reason I give it three is because I find that once it has absorbed, it feels nice and it seems to protect my skin well. For the comments about piling, I only experience it when I have other products underneath, if I only use it alone it goes on nice and smooth. For me the smell is why I probably wouldn’t purchase again.
    Could work for dry skin!
Very oily for my acne-prone skin. Metallic smell and leaves a white cast. Avoid application close to the eye area! Definitely not a great choice for daily use. I only use it when I go to the beach.
    Disappointed
Love Drunk Elephant and have tried most of the products but this sunscreen is not good. It pills very easily, especially if you mix it with products that are not in the same range and it leaves a white cast. It's thick - l now usually mix it with the sunshine drops but despite them saying that's OK l am sure the efficaciousness of the SPF is effected. The only product so far that l would not recommend or repurchase.
    Comically bad
I don't even know what to say. It comes out of the tube like runny, gritty, greasy paint. Applied to the skin it... curdles. I can't even call it pilling, it's more like it's stringy and curdly. Maybe chunky even. I've tried it over serums and just straight on the skin, and it doesn't work either way. It just does not want to cooperate. I don't think this product should have been released, it is just unusable. There are loads of mineral sunscreens that manage to be cosmetically elegant, I don't see how a huge company like DE couldn't manage to make one.
    Nice sunscreen
I really like the consistency and sun protection in this product. I have really dry skin, so I need serum and moisturiser underneath, because it clings to the dry spots on my face. It gives a nice glow to the face - almost like a discreet highlighter. It leaves a thin layer on the face, but that is to be expected from a mineral sunscreen, and it is great for people like me with really dry skin, because it makes it feel less dry. I did not mind. Bottom line: good product. If I don't find anything better, I will buy this again.
    Disappointed - whitecast; pilling
If you're lighter skinned and don't wear makeup then this might be for you. I'm medium toned and wear makeup daily so this is not for me. It left a whitecast which took some time to reduce in appearance but was still somewhat visible. Also experience pilling throughout the day when wearing makeup. Perhaps it's because I use a face oil, I'm not sure.
    I love it!
I have combination skin and this cream works beautiful for me!
Thank you Cult Beauty for stocking this!
This is by far the best mineral sunscreen I have ever used! I highly recommend it.
    White mask
This doesn’t sink in at all. And my skin (sensitive) feels itchy.
Light SPF and sits well on face...
Isn't it strange how reviews are so mixed. My tube was a liquidy milk-like texture and left no white cast on my combination skin. The only thing I am not sure about is that I detect a faint sparkle to it which I assume is how it is meant to be? 90ml will last a long time and the expiry date is literally 03/21. I like it, but when it is finished will move on and try a different brand.
    Happy with the purchase
Doesn't leave a white cast on my skin (which is mainly oily during the summer), easy to blend in and leaves my skin soft. I don't wear make up during the day, so don't know if it affects the wear of foundation, but so far, very satisfied with the product. A little goes a long way and the shine goes away after a couple of minutes.
Wasn't a nice experience to use it
It didn't suit my combination skin. It was really hard to blend and it pilled a lot. And it also dried up my cheeks really badly.
Worst skincare product I’ve ever used
It’s so thick and difficult to apply, it feels almost like glue. And it balls up on the skin, feels heavy and leaves a white cast. Not ideal to apply foundation over, or to even wear on its own due to the white cast. Wish I hadn’t wasted money on this, it’s unusable.
Great SPF and moisturiser but balls up!!
I love this. It does have a white cast but it's really moisturising... However applying makeup on top of this is a task!! It balls up and if you attempt to buff over the top the foundation starts moving around a bit and starts looking very textured... Very strange, but still workable and I will still repurchase!!!
    So, so happy with this
This is my first mineral sunscreen and let me tell you - it's good! On my skin (fair) it leaves no white cast, at first has an oily application but after 7 min, my skin is soft with no oily residue. It does not make my skin more oily - so my skin does not produce more oil than usual (I have combination skin). What I like the most - I no longer need a moisturiser!! My skin is so, so soft - baby skin - after this cream. Even the texture of my skin is better after one week of use! I have nights when the tendency is to want to put this cream on my skin - so good is the effect. I like it very much and it was a good purchase for me.
    heavy and white
I was really looking forward to using this as I'm allergic to most sunscreens (really hard to find a good mineral one!). As it was described as "sheer" and "non-sticky" I thought it'd be great HOWEVER it doesn't dry down at all, stays quite oily and heavy feeling and does leave a white cast. I really did want to like this but it wasn't to be - if you prefer physical sunscreen I'd recommend Coola or Ren.
the worst SPF product I tried lately
I used to put some SPF product after my daily moisturizer and before make up. For the last few years I got or SkinMedica or Australian Gold SPF products which worked pretty well I decided to try this product because of huge hype around Drunk Elephant in social media. Frankly speaking, it has bad consistency, is not properly absorbed by skin and leaves strong white cast. Despite using mattifying primer above this SPF product my skin has strong greasy look all day long despite using my usual Dior backstage foundation and Too Faced loose powder. It may work only at the sea side when you re-apply the SPF cream after each bathing and do not care about your make-up.
    Heaviest that I tried
    Literally a waste of money
    Where do I start?
Not only does a little go a long way but this has got to be one of the few SPF's I've tried that allows your skin to breath O_o The product is very lightweight and just all-round amazing! The products finish is also a winner for me as it doesn't leave that super shiny film that some SPF's have. #WinnerForMe #StockUp #Love Lastly being a physical SPF it protects from the sun as soon as it’s applied, no wait needed, less likely to block pores and is better for sensitive skin. Over and out.
    Terrible for price
I bought this after many people said it was an excellent sunscreen for under makeup... however I’ve tried to work with this so many times and it just keeps pilling. I thought maybe it could be due to the products I’m using underneath it so I tried using on bare skin and it still manages to pill. Literally a waste of £29. Soooo disappointed!!!!!
    Drunk Elephant Physical Sun screen
Really like the formula, it feels nice and hydrating. The consistency is a tiny bit gritty but that's always the case with this type of sunscreen. It leaves a white cast and a slight greasy finish that disappears after 20 mins or so. I think it's kind of over priced as you can get similar ones for a better price, but it works with my sensitive skin.
    Kinda oily
Definitely leaves a white cast. Too oily to put on face underneath makeup. I will only suggest using this on the neck if you have a lighter skin tone on the face and want them to match.
    Not as expected
Resembles coconut cream with bits or like watery cream cheese... It takes awhile to rub in and absorb. Sometimes it will pill but not all the time.
    Not completely happy
Does not leave a white cast and goes very matte, but... it dries out my skin a lot. So a moisturiser underneath is a must but that gives pilling issues.
    Greasy Film
Bought this as I needed an SPF and Sonya Dakar is sold out (everywhere!). But it is quite possibly the worst SPF I have ever used. I have used it once, it's a greasy layer that sits on your face and I could feel it all day and made my face feel sweaty. Couldn't wait to get home and wash it off. If I could return it I would. Avoid.
    Disappointing
For me, this came out as a white somewhat sticky product. When I applied the prerequisite 1/4 teaspoon for the whole face this took a while to sink in, and something in the ingredients made my face and eyes feel somewhat warm and a bit stingy. It did not sit happily over the top of other skincare, even though I use all DE products, although the addition of a drop of oil did help with the balling up a bit. I am disappointed because I like DE products and it is extremely difficult to find a decent mineral sunscreen without fragrance of some sort or worse; essential oils. It is a generous size and quite nourishing but that is about it.
Wasn't sure because of the reviews but I love it!
I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I do because of the mixed reviews. In the morning I cleanse and apply a hydrating serum and then use this in the place of a moisturiser. This works really well for my dry skin. It does take about 5-10 minutes to soak in but my skin and looks and feels great with and without makeup when I use this. I've not noticed any pilling when I apply my makeup so this might depend on what foundation you use. However, I can see that those with more oily skin types may find this to be too heavy. I also don't notice any white cast with this but my skin is fair. I can't wait to use this on holiday with a pump of D-Bronzi mixed in!
    nice but not on me
This would be a nice sunscreen for those with normal skin - unfortunately my dry/sensitive skin freaked out and now I have red itchy patches on my cheeks. Not the look I was going for! Apart from that, it's a passable product, and my partner uses it without any such problems. It applies well, although it has a tendency to gather in fine lines, like on eyelids and in smile lines. My skin is pale so I didn't notice much of a white cast, but someone with darker skin might feel differently.
    Perfekt ***Perfect
***I love this sunscreen. I can not understand some of the other comments. I cleanse my face, apply my hyaluronic serum and then this sunscreen. It sits well and make up looks great. I have dry, dehydrated skin and like to add a little gloss with blotting paper after my makeup. However, it's important to note that make up should also contain oil otherwise it might mix properly and sit well.
    Big white cast
I love the way this product smells and the ingredients do work well with my skin type (dry). However, I can't get over how much white it leaves on the face - to the extent where someone asked why my face was white (I had all my makeup on top) I will keep using it but won't repurchase.
    Good, but...
I like that this is an eco-friendly sunscreen and contains hydrating ingredients. The Hungarian summer is very hot (up to 30-35°C) and I don't like to wear lots of stuff on my face during the day because creams just melt off in a minute. This is a one step morning routine for me. It gives enough hydration to my skin. But... it is a little bit heavy and I need to wait approx. 10-15 min. before I could put some make-up on.
    Balls up
I have oily skin and this sunscreen balls up easily on me, I use one-quarter teaspoon for my face. It helps a little if you apply it in sections. It needs some time to settle (like many sunscreens) especially if you plan to put make up on.
Excellent SPF cream, great price too!
This has to be the best priced product in the whole Drunk Elephant range and what's more, it's excellent! This SPF cream suits all skin types except for the very oily. Dry and dehydrated skin types may want to apply moisturiser first as usual, but 'normal' and combination skin types could skip moisturiser altogether! It's saving me a few minutes every morning! It does leave a slight white cast, despite the claim that it doesn't - it did on me, anyway - and the screw cap closure isn't the best, but neither of these small points is enough to stop me giving this top marks. I love it!
