What does retinol do to my skin?

When it comes to your skin, retinol goes beyond its call of duty. More than just a powerhouse that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, retinol accelerates cell turnover stimulating the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin – the skin-essential ‘scaffolding’ that keep skin smooth and supple. And if that wasn’t enough, the vitamin A derivative also works hard to banish blemishes, dullness and pigmentation by stimulating the skin’s healing and reparative processes Like we said – there are few things this ingredient can’t do!

Can I use retinol every day?

Using retinol every day can be effective for your complexion, but this all depends on your skin type and how your skin reacts to the ingredient. Retinol is a potent form of vitamin A that helps with cell turnover, reducing wrinkles, blemishes and everything in between, however, for many people, especially those with sensitive skin, using retinol every day from the start can cause dryness, irritation, redness, or peeling. Instead, we recommend easing into it by applying it 2-3 times a week and gradually increase the frequency as your skin builds tolerance.

Who should not use retinol?

Retinol is a powerful skin care ingredient, but it’s not suitable for everyone. As a form of vitamin A, retinol should be avoided when pregnant or breastfeeding as it can be harmful to the baby. Also, if you suffer from sensitive skin or conditions such as rosacea or eczema, retinol can cause redness, dryness, peeling, or in some cases worsen preexisting symptoms – therefore we also recommend avoiding it. Finally, it’s also essential to check what other ingredients you are using in your routine before applying this powerhouse. If you’re using AHAs, BHAs or other retinoids, combining them with retinol can increase irritation. So in this case it’s best to avoid using multiple strong actives at once.
