This month's Italian Vogue has controversially themed its cover around the horror of domestic abuse and it's causing an uproar. People are cursing Vogue, Steven Meisel, Pat McGrath for 'glamourising' and 'trivialising' the subject.
This is a blatantly cry for publicity, however, there is a positive upside. Domestic violence against women is a huge problem, and it's raceless and classless and could just as easily happen to a model like Karen Elson - pictured - or your best friend, as it can the stereotyped working class, single mother with an alcoholic boyfriend.
A third of all women in Europe are victims of some kind of domestic violence, and in the UK 40% of all female murder victims are killed by partners or someone they know well... and these are just the reported cases. The police in the UK are woefully under-trained and underfunded to deal with this. Sometimes civilians like us are better placed to help than the cops, . Turn Italian Vogue's piece into something that makes you and others around you more aware so we can combat the stigma attached to this subject. If you are a victim of abuse, whether physical or mental call this 24 hour free helpline - 0808 2000 247 - the all-women team can help with support, advice and understanding.
