The best of beauty at Milan Fashion Week

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

The juxtaposition of Milan and London fashion weeks highlights the contrasting creativity of two cities with very different stakes in style. While in London backstage beauty was about adding impact and heightening drama, the look in Milan was one of subdued elegance. The heavy make up previously favoured by Italian designers was washed off to make way for a lighter base that allows naturally beauty to shine through. Colour palettes were kept neutral with the exception of bursts of intense rouge or vibrant pinks, which were applied to create statement lips. Perfectly pretty, we love these looks for their fashion-forward wearability:

Fendi

Pretty yet sultry, make up at Fendi was inspired by the actress Sylvia Kristel in “Emmanuelle”. Described by make up artist Peter Phillips as “a girly, erotic, late ’70s look”, eyes were made up with shimmery rose  and plum colours to create a perfect spring alternative to the smokey eye.

Bottega Veneta

A strong spring look, at Bottega Veneta skin was kept fresh and dewy with eyelids left bare to draw focus to stand out lips. Key to perfecting this clean face is impeccable grooming; make sure eyebrows are neat and lips have been exfoliated to ensure flawless lipstick application.

Prada

At Prada statement lips were again the look du jour, but this time with a dramatic edge. Make up artist Pat McGrath custom-mixed her own orange-y red shade to create scorching lips while keeping t the rest of the make up to a bare minimum. Mascara, blush and shadow were all skipped to add impact to the lips and set the look alight.

Gucci

It appears Gucci’s traditional statement eyes were left behind at AW09 as this season models were sent down the runway sporting a natural look. Make up was subtle yet the girls remained airbrushed and ethereal. Pat McGrath used a light brown powder on the eyes and defined the lash line with a narrow brown liquid liner before applying brown mascara and highlighting cheekbones with a nude pink cream Cover Girl blush.

Tribal beauty at Rodarte

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

RODA_SS10_0045

One of New York’s less conservative brands, Rodarte held their S/S 10 runway show yesterday. This was a great example of integrated beauty and fashion looks with a Mad Max/tribal-warrior-style look accompanied by simple black body paint. The Maori-inspired tattoos were created by MAC’s Senior Artist Chantel Miller and top catwalk make up guru James Kaliardos. “They want women to look at makeup as an accessory for an outfit the way you would a bracelet or a necklace,” said Chantel Miller.
