Oh to be a French girl. No matter what they’re wearing, what they’re doing, these mademoiselles are always the epitome of chic. Lou Doillon might be half English, but with the ultimate Francophile Jane Birkin as her maman, it was inevitable that she should become the queen of the Parisian scene.
Hers is an unconventional beauty – her features are cartoonishly exaggerated – gangly, coltish limbs, a toothy lopsided grin, a messy mane of tumbling dark curls – but it all fits together with a perfect insouciance that’s impossible to fake. Lou’s modeled, sung, acted (see below for cult French designer Vanessa Bruno) and designed; bringing her own irrepressible spirit to each venture. Unlike most po-faced clothes horses, she giggled her way down the catwalks. Clothes don’t wear her, she most definitely wears them.
